Sergio Frias Workshops

 

UCG seeks to bring classical guitar back to the general community through this series of workshops.

Classical Guitar Workshop

Acoustic Popular/Flatpick Guitar Workshop

All levels -- Basic to Advanced

Sergio Frias has a Master’s degree in concert music performance from the National Conservatory of Music of Mexico. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Classical and Electric guitar with more than 20 years of experience as the Chair of the guitar department and deputy director at the Conservatory. He has taught in basic education as well. He is a Research Professor at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico, and has performed as a recording session and live concert stage musician for various bands and artists.

Right and Left hand technique

Reading and analysis of scores

Repertoire awareness

Individualized instruction on a target piece

The Acoustic Popular/Flatpick Guitar Workshop covers:

All levels — Beginner to Advanced

Popular guitar techniques

Use of the pick

Main pentatonic scales, major and minor scales

Harmonic construction of the most common chords: major, minor, sevenths

Progression of blues circles

Matthew Baker age 18, began playing the classical guitar when he was four years old.  He studies classical and electric guitar with Austin Weyand.

Matthew has garnered awards in many national competitions including the 2nd Places in the Southern Guitar Festival, Mid Maryland Guitar Festival and the Kithara Projects National Guitar Competitions. 

Matthew has soloed with The Timpanogos Symphony, Utah Philharmonic, and the American Fork Symphony.

Matthew enjoys reading and playing tennis. 

With his mother and siblings, Matthew has performed in musical group ”Jenny Oaks Baker & Family Four" with orchestras and choirs throughout the country including The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra on Temple Square, Warminster Symphony and  Utah Symphony.

Popular with audiences, Jenny Oaks Baker & Family Four have performed in concert halls throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, and their music videos have garnered millions of views. Their debut album, “Jenny Oaks Baker & Family Four” hit #4 on the Billboard Classical Crossover and Classical Charts and their most recent album, “Joy to the World” hit #7 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Chart. 

Matthew graduates from Woods Cross High School in May. He will then leave on a mission to Antofagasta, Chile for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon his return in 2027, Matthew will attend Brigham Young University.
