Utah Classical Guitar proudly presents three local classical guitar ensembles: students from Providence Hall High School (Herriman UT) under the direction of Sarah Palma, students from Weber State University (Ogden UT) directed by Sophie Stanley, and the students of Gabino Flores. Please come to celebrate our local students and teachers!

Sarah Shay Palma has been playing Classical Guitar since she was seven years old and added Jazz study to her repertoire in High School. She has studied with well-respected and widely recognized instructors and performers including Stan Funicelli, Kenji Aihara, Tully Cathey, and Todd Woodbury. As a music student at the University of Utah, she performed in both Classical and Jazz Guitar Ensembles, and was also a recipient of scholarships for Classical Guitar. On scholarship, Sarah studied abroad in Spain. She later returned to study flamenco with maestro Enrique Vargas in Madrid.

Ms. Palma began teaching privately as a teen. In addition to teaching a private studio, she continues as the guitar instructor at the University of Utah Preparatory Division. Sarah is the director of a four-level guitar program and the AP Music Theory instructor at Providence Hall High School.  Her award winning ensembles receive superior ratings at State Festivals year after year in Classical and Jazz styles.

Sarah performs in a variety of settings including private parties and events, formal concerts, and in studio sessions.

Sophie Stanley (born in 1993 in Utah, USA) is a classical guitarist known for her “bright sound and vibrant energy”. Sophie has played the classical guitar since the age of 6 when she first heard the Dixie Chicks and “just had to play.” She graduated magna cum laude with her B.A. in Instrumental Performance from Weber State University in 2015 and received her M.M. in Music Performance from New England Conservatory in 2018, where she studied under the virtuoso Belgian guitarist, Dr. Jerome Mouffe, as well as Eliot Fisk.

In addition to teaching as adjunct faculty at Weber State University, the Gifted Music School in Salt Lake City, and maintaining a full private guitar studio, Sophie also serves as a board member of the Utah Classical Guitar Society and the Intermountain Suzuki String Institute. Sophie loves performing on her beloved Cervantes guitar "Rodrigo Cervantes Montoya".

She has also been a guest artist at International Guitar Festivals in Sweden, Italy, Panama, Canada, and Mexico. She has been featured on the cover of Classical Guitar Magazine. Guitar International Magazine has described her as “the complete package,” “with a musicality and emotional quality . . . that one would expect from someone much older than the young wunderkind. Not only is she able to draw you into her performances with engaging musical interpretations, but she has the technical facility that is required of any concert-level guitarist.” Her playing has been described as “passionate,” “evocative,” and “virtuosic.”

In addition to her performing career, Ms. Vardanyan is an avid teacher. She maintains a private studio in New York City and frequently teaches master classes and guitar technique workshops during her concert travels.  Ms. Vardanyan is the author of four books from Mel Bay Publication and has an extensive list of instructional guitar videos on both her own and the Strings by Mail channels on YouTube.

Ms. Vardanyan began studying the guitar in her native Armenia at the age of five under the careful guidance of her father, Vardan Vardanyan. At the age of eight, she gave her first public performance and also appeared on Armenian National Television. She was the first prize winner in the Armenian National Music Contest “Amadeus” and was accepted into the prestigious group, “New Names,” for talented young musicians. She performed in numerous concert venues in Armenia, including Komitas Chamber Music Hall and the Small Philharmonic Hall. She went on to study with Antigoni Goni at the Pre-College Division of the Juilliard School. In 2001, Ms. Vardanyan studied with John Wunsch at the Interlochen Arts Academy. She was awarded the Young Artist’s Certificate from Interlochen Center for the Arts and the Harold Randolph Prize in performance from the Peabody Conservatory.

Andrew York is one of today's best loved composers for classical guitar and a performer of international stature. His compositions blend the styles of ancient eras with modern musical directions, creating music that is at once vital, multi-leveled and accessible. Andrew received a Grammy Award as a member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet during his sixteen years with the cutting-edge ensemble. York’s compositions have been featured on Grammy-winning recordings by Jason Vieaux (CD “Play”, featuring Andrew’s iconic composition “Sunburst”, 2015) and Sharon Isbin (CD “Journey to the New World” featuring “Andecy”, 2010). In 2006 Andrew recorded and performed with the Atlanta Symphony for the opera “Ainadamar” by Osvaldo Golijov. The recording of “Ainadamar” (Deutsche Gramophone) won two GRAMMY awards.

Andrew’s video “Home" has received millions of views, with Andrew playing his recent hit on a vintage Torres guitar built in 1888.

Andrew has released CDs on Sony-U.S., Sony-Japan, King Records (Japan), Telarc, GSP and Delos labels, as well as inclusion on Rhino Records “Legends of Guitar” and numerous other compilations. Andrew’s 2010 CD release “Centerpeace” offers individual collaborations with guitarist Andy Summers, and pianists Mitsuko Kado and Allaudin Mathieu.

Andrew's most recent recordings “Home" and "The Equations of Beauty,” were released on both vinyl LP and two separate EP/CDs. The recordings include "Home" and the 26-minute suite "The Equations of Beauty," based on mathematics.

Andrew’s solo recording “Yamour” was released on vinyl as a double LP album, and garnered the number one spot in Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s “Essential Recordings of 2012” by editor Teja Gerken. Commenting on the more than eighty minutes of new pieces for solo guitar he composed for this major work, Andrew says “When I write I feel a connection to my spirit and the joy and sorrow of life. My entire life comes into focus and there is no separation between me as a boy, a young man and now in my later years.”

In Andrew’s concerts the theater becomes a living room, and the musical conversation begins with the first note. His authenticity has inspired a worldwide following, with his touring schedule spanning more than thirty countries. Recent concerts include Rome, Lima, Beijing, Ankara, Munich, Manhattan, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania and Andrew’s twelfth tour of Japan.

In film, Andrew performs in the live documentary “Primal Twang,” written and hosted by eminent musician and storyteller Dan Crary, with other artists Eric Johnson, Albert Lee, Doc Watson, and Mason Williams.

York's compositions have also been recorded by guitar luminaries John Williams and Christopher Parkening, Sharon Isbin, Jason Vieaux, and Japanese pianist Mitsuko Kado. In addition, generations of younger guitarists make Andrew’s music a staple of their repertoire in their performances and studies. As a published composer, York's works appear in print worldwide through Majian Music, Alfred Publications, Hal Leonard, Mel Bay Publications, Guitar Solo Publications, Doberman-Yppan in Canada, Ricordi in London, and Gendai in Japan.

A love of music was instilled at an early age; Andrew’s father was a guitarist and his mother a professional singer. Family reunions abounded with folk music ranging from frontier American to English and Celtic traditional songs.

Andrew crosses over stylistic boundaries with an unusual authority - besides his classical contribution, he also has an extensive background as a jazz guitarist, studying with jazz legends Joe Diorio and Lenny Breau. As a classical musician, Andrew was awarded a grant from the Del Amo Foundation for Study in Spain. Andrew received his Master of Music degree from University of Southern California, and is the only USC graduate in the school’s history to twice receive the Outstanding Alumni of the Year Award – in 1997 as a member of Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and in 2003 as the sole recipient. Andrew is a member of the Triple Nine Society.

Program

Described as creating "music of dramatic power and lyric beauty," Dr. Ben Lougheed knows how to draw in audiences and give them “another dimension in which to enjoy [his] performances." A performer, entrepreneur, and pedagogue in his multifaceted career, Ben's diverse professional experiences include over ten years of performances, community engagement, music entrepreneurship, and teaching. Audiences, colleagues, and critics have repeatedly referred to Ben as "an emerging force in the classical guitar world” and “without question a first-rate artist”

A central thread to all of Ben's work is his focus on education and outreach. His desire to engage audiences and communities through vivid and captivating musical performances is only strengthened by his love of connecting with his audience through informative exchanges. These lively audience-performer interactions serve to strengthen each person’s experience with the music and have been enthusiastically received by concertgoers around the country, including recent performances for Utah Classical Guitar, the Treasure Coast Guitar Society, Kerrytown Concert House, and the Dale Mabry Guitar Series.

Ben is also a highly sought-after and accomplished teacher who has built one of the largest Suzuki guitar studios in the Southeastern United States. As the only guitarist in the world with a doctorate and all nine Suzuki book certifications, Ben is in demand as a guest instructor at events across the country. His students have been selected for the All-State and All-National ensembles and won prizes at multiple guitar competitions.

Ben's creative fingerprints can be seen all around his community via his numerous projects and collaborations. As the founder and director of the Florida Guitar Festival, Ben has raised over $65,000 to bring together hundreds of burgeoning musicians and students for educational activities, concerts, and competitions. Additionally, Ben's work with the festival included a collaboration with GRAMMY-winner Bill Kanengiser on the first recorded performance of Sergio Assad’s piece, “The Walls.” Furthermore, Ben's community engagement includes being a Founder and Director of the Tallahassee Chapter of Classical Revolution, a classical music outreach organization that produced dozens of classical music concerts in non-traditional venues.

Ben’s debut album, Baroque Legacies, showcases music by influential and celebrated Baroque composers parallel with contemporary pieces inspired by these historic paragons of the music world. Described as "emotionally delicious from start to finish" and "technically perfect," this recording provides a glimpse into how lyrical beauty is pervasive through time.
